April 10 2019 – Yesterday we hosted a workshop on the SDGs, human rights, and salient issues together with David Vermijs from Shift, the leading center of expertise on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Together with several companies from our network we discussed how companies can identify key risks and opportunities in the field of human rights, how they can prioritise  these issues and engage stakeholders in the process. First, companies should work out where the salient (most severe) risks to people and planet are within their operations and value chains and map those priorities to the most relevant SDG goals and targets. Then, they need to find ways to tackle those risks in ways that maximize positive outcomes and therefore support the Global Goals.

By identifying and prioritizing human rights issues within both the company as well as within the value chain, companies can implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and help deliver significant contributions to the SDGs.
